We'll be starting a new petition soon, concerning
the Battlefield Protection Act legislation before Congress in the fall
of 2009. In the meantime, we welcome you to read...
WHEREAS The Fishkill Supply Depot, located
in the Town of Fishkill, New York, was an essential military facility
established by General George Washington;
WHEREAS The Depot played in essential role in the victory of the Continental
Army over British forces during the American Revolution, and is therefore
listed on the National Register of Historic Places;
WHEREAS The Depot Site is a highly unusual and significant part of
the historical heritage of the Town of Fishkill, of the State of New
York, and of the United States of America;
WHEREAS The Depot Site originally contained a complex of Continental
Army features, including a cemetery, hospital, barracks, blacksmith’s
shop, stables, and other buildings within an area of approximately
70 acres along what is now Route 9 south of Interstate 84 in Fishkill;
WHEREAS Most of the original 70 acres formerly occupied by the Fishkill
Supply Depot Site has been consumed by large-scale commercial development
since 1970; and
WHEREAS Any remaining undeveloped land located within the original
Supply Depot vicinity may contain unrecorded, significant archaeological
resources that offer unique evidence of the activities of the Continental
Army under General Washington;
WHEREAS the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places,
and thus, according to 6 NYCRR Part 617.4(b)(9), is a Type 1 Action
and is presumed to require an Environmental Impact Statement;
NOW, THEREFORE: We, The Undersigned, do hereby recommend that the
Town of Fishkill formally request the State of New York Office of
Historic Preservation to review (in accordance with SEQRA) all development
actions that shall be proposed within any remaining undeveloped land
in the vicinity of the original Fishkill Supply Depot Site (such development
actions presently including the proposed “Crossroads of Fishkill”
commercial development). The objective of SEQRA review of proposed
development actions will be to ensure the appropriate recognition,
interpretation, stewardship and management of any significant heritage
resources that survive at the Fishkill Supply Depot Site.
A
Treasure to be Kept: Public Comments
In response to a petition that Fishkill
Historical Focus distributed in 2007, we received an extraordinary
outpouring of public sentiment in favor of preserving the Fishkill
Supply Depot Revolutionary War Site.
A TREASURE TO BE KEPT!!
American history is priceless. It must be preserved.
archaeological sites are like libraries on our past
As a descendant of several men who served in the 7th Dutchess County
Militia, saving this very historical site would truly honor my patriot
ancestors as well as help in the preservation of our history
As a student of history, I oppose any plan of action that destroys
any historical site.
As the wife of a ret Marine, I find this disrespectful to all who
have served faithfully and given their lives in support of our country.
Born & raised in Pok. Ancestors from Fishkill area. This place
is unique. It needs to be kept intact.
CANT TOUCH THIS! IT’S ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER
…Supporter of historical land. My ancestors were the Dutch
Immigrants who farmed this land and (some have) no regard for its
historical value. Overdeveloping=crime
Depot is worth saving
Developing this site would be like burning George Washington's personal
library.
Do NOT develop this area!!
Don't deprive future generations of our heritage
Drop in at the Van Wyck Homestead (US-9 x I-84) on Saturday or Sunday
afternoon and see for yourselves.
Dutchess County is a seat of History. Let's keep it.
explore purchasing development rights as we do for preserving farms
Far too many sites have been lost! Time to save one!
Fishkill could have a thriving tourist business that would recognize
efforts and sacrifices made in founding our country. It could be
clean, natural and beautiful - a welcoming gateway to the area.
Fishkill Depot was selected for survey by NPS American Battlefield
protection Program (http://www.cr.nps.gov/hps/abpp/)
because of its logistical importance to the Continental Army.
Fishkill doesn't need another shopping center. Just because the
first one didn't work, doesn't mean that they have to destroy a
historic site to build another one.
fishkill has ensured its future as the hotel center of dutchess
co. Preserving its historical past is the true challenge for the
generations of the future.
Fishkill's history is important to the whole story of the Hudson
Valley.
Fishkill's history makes it memorable. Malls make it boring and
average.
Further destruction of this land must be stopped-we must learn for
our past.
Future generations will be glad we acted to save this site
Hasn't the Hudson Valley been malled enough?
Have the land surveyed and let's save this historic piece of property
Highly in favor of preserving this important historic location
Historic Sites such as this one is literally irreplaceable
History can never be replaced....
History IS important. We need to preserve our heritage.
how un patriotic can you get?
I am against development of this important historic and green area;
SEQRA is necessary
I am appalled at the treatment of Veterans of New York by the state
they helped defend in her time of need! New York State government
needs to know We The People will not take this disgraceful treatment
I am descended from N.Y. Patriots whose families moved west; my
son has been accepted at RPI, at Troy, so we intend to visit many
historic spots in N.Y. State the next four years, including Fishkill.
I fully support all efforts to protect this area from development
I grew up near Fishkill, NY
I grew up right down the road from this site and feel a survey should
be done to preserve this vestige of the past.
I have always cared about history and sacred ground. In this case,
it's personal. My fourth-great grandparent spent his last days as
a Revolutionary War soldier there.
I helped fight development of a prehistoric/historic site in White
Plains only to lose to development. We need to save the supply depot
as it is an underappreciated Rev War site.
I hope we can save more of this historical area! Keep up the good
fight!
I think something should be done to preserve this land for future
generations. At the rate the area is being developed there will be
no land left of historical value to save.
I urge you to save this piece of our history.
Important Historic sites are lost everyday, please don't destroy this
one also.
In addition to the many soldiers, this area was also occupied by hundreds
of civilian artificers and their wives and children. There is a tremendous
amount of research that needs to be done on them.
In an area of dwindling open space, the combination of land conservation
and historic preservation could not be better served than by saving
this property.
Instead of tearing down history, get tour packages together and make
money for the community and the historical sites. As a newcomer to
the area, I expected better Historical Preservation here.
It is a shame that people could even think that such a site should
not be saved.
It is ironic that a new shopping development is being proposed on
an historical site directly across from two large abandoned shopping
mall buildings.
It is too bad when our cultural heritage is swallowed up pursuit of
the almighty dollar.
It’s important that we remember what made this county great
!!
It’s time to stop over development in lieu of historical preservation.
keep our history or our future generations will be lost.
Keep this site in tact for my children to see!
Let's protect this important site.
Let's respect our history and ancestors here
Most of my ancestors came from Dutchess county. And a lot came from
Fishkill. Why is it that politicians and developers seem to be in
bed together. Is nothing sacred. Please don't hurting our past.
Must be saved!! Great Historical value.
My 4th Great Grandfather Colin McLachlan served with Hazen's Regiment
here. New York, save your heritage before it is gone!
my ancestor Henry Sewall served at this very location, preserve his
sacrifice as a "temple of liberty", not a short sited development
which threatens to consume our nations history
My ancestors came from the Fishkill area and I would like to support
the saving of our history in NY.
My ancestors lived in Fishkill, NY during this historic period. Please
save this site for posterity.
My ancestors served in militia units from the Hudson River valley;
and in the Continental Army itself, 1777-1780; this depot was critical
to the successful 7 year struggle for American independence.
My GGGGG great grandfather, Capt. Archelaus died there Dec. 1779.
We must honor the brave souls who fought for us. Protect this site
and insist on a thorough environmental and historical impact review.
need to preserve historical sites!
no more ghost malls
Once historic sites are gone, they are gone forever. We must preserve
them for future generations.
Once the history of the birth of our country is bulldozed and blacktopped
its fate is sealed forever. We have already lost too much of our history
to progress.
Our Founding Fathers are frequently cited in American politics. The
site represents one of the few chances for the public and private
sectors to preserve a part of that important heritage.
Our historical heritage is so important to preserve.
Our history is who we are!
Our history must be preserved. This site is one of the few remaining
links to our past and as such is too valuable to be developed for
commercial use.
Our history, particularly of the sacrifices made during our Revolution,
should be preserved so that future generations can appreciate their
freedom.
Our patriotism demands that we elevate our Revolutionary War heroes
and history above plans for the next shopping mall. Fishkill is sitting
on a national treasure and treating it like garbage!
Please don't let this site disappear!
Please help us preserve this important
historic site in Fishkill - our history is what grounds us and gives
our lives meaning - Let us preserve it for future generations - Lest
We Forget!
Please honor the remains of our Revolutionary War dead. We need to
locate, preserve and protect our fallen heroes.
Please keep this historic site open to the public
Please preserve our vanishing historical sites!
Please save our history!
Please save this hallowed ground, no battle but many patriots died
here on their way to battle.
Please save this historic site - this is burial ground
Please save this historic site men are buried here
Please save this historical site for the future
Please save this important historic site
Please save this important historical site for the future
Please save this important site.
Please save this!!
Preservation of our country's historic sites should not be compromised
by the wishes of those who only think of financial gain.
Preserve history for our children
preserve the site
Preserve this historic site before it is too late.
prevent from further development
Protect this sacred ground
PROTECT THIS SITE!
Put Fishkill on the map for more than just a fine correctional facility
Respect for the Land starts with History
Retail is fleeting. History is Forever. Preserve Wide Open Spaces
Now! Save this historic Fishkill site before it is too late.
review process an excellent way to balance community needs
Save our history!
Save this piece of history
Save this site!
Save this site! I can't believe money means more than history!
Saving our History always has value to our future.
Saving this, our precious heritage preserves nature too. Yet another
mall hurts both.
So much of our history has been lost to unthinking development! Who
owns our heritage? We, the people. We, the people demand that our
government protect our heritage and our future.
So much of this site has been destroyed by developers; we need to
protect what is left for future generations
STOP URBAN REMOVAL AND ARCHETECTURAL GENOCIDE
strong historical site to save; now!
That's my mother's comment below. I couldn't agree more.
The Depot is important to the History of the Continental Army
The Fishkill Depot is an important part of our American History and
must be preserved. There are too many strip malls already. No wonder
Hudson Valley is on National Trust Most Endangered Places.
The lack of appreciation for our historical heritage is an embarrassment
to a civilized society!
The Officials at Town Hall need the support of Fishkill's citizens
to keep this area clear of development. Developing the Dutchess Mall
area rather than untouched land may be a possibility. A swap?
the pieces of history that we have are fragile and everyone must work
to preserve them, a strip mall will be gone in five years--and we
will be faced with ugly empty buildings
The Sierra Club is against development of this important historic
and green area and agrees that SEQRA is necessary
The Supply Depot is an important part of our historical heritage in
the Hudson Valley. Please preserve so that I may educate my children
and they in turn, one day, may educate theirs.
There has been too much commercial building in Fishkill over the past
few years and in my opinion it's simply time to STOP! Fishkill's natural
beauty and rich history should be preserved.
There is an abandoned Mall just sitting across the street!!!!!!
there is no reason to ruin sacred historical sites, no reason -- not
ever!
There is plenty of land in NY that is not historically significant.
These lands should be held in trust for all.
They can build a mall somewhere else where there is nothing of historical
significance. Besides, there is a mall across the highway that should
be utilized instead of becoming an eyesore.
This Historic site was vital to our nation’s war effort and
should be preserved for the next generation of Americans.
This is a historical site don't destroy it.
This is a site that is important to ALL Americans.
This is an historic site worthy of preservation.
This is sacred holy ground. My ancestor François Martin-Pelland,
a Fr.Canadian, died here in Fishkill and is buried here in a mass-burial
ground.
This is an important historical site and
should be preserved for future generation.
This is an important historical site that should receive archaeological
review before any development. If not, vital history could be lost.
This is site is important for our children to learn about our nations
history
This is such an important site, it should be protected from development
and preserved for all of us to learn from.
This location has such a historical part in the making of our county.
This may represent one of the most important sites in the Mid-Hudson
Region. Please take the necessary steps to further investigate and
preserve it.
This shoudn't even be an issue whatsoever. This world has become totally
heartless !! We have to put a stop to this at once !!!
This site as equally important as Valley Forge or Morristown needs
preservation.
This site is an Historical research treasure yet uncovered, similar
to Fort Montgomery. It should be preserved in the names of History
and Honor.
This site is of great Historical importance to our Nations birth..It
MUST BE SAVED!!
This site is of historic value & must be saved.
This site is of national
significance. Its archaeological resources need to be studied, and
the site preserved.
This site is unique, could yield much needed information in the study
of the Continental Army!!! Please do everything you can to preserve
it!!!!
This site must be preserved to allow future generations a chance to
walk on land that helped make America a free nation.
This site needs to be saved. Our children need to understand why we
have this country, not another mall to hang-out in.
This site should be preserved as open space; we have enough strip
malls & not enough history!
Though I no longer live in the Hudson Valley I support local efforts
to preserve important parts of its history
Thousands of Continental Troops passed through this site, which supported
the Northern Army. If it were not for this depot, the British most
certainly would have gained control of the Hudson river.
Too much new development diminishes the historic character of the
town. Many times areas are better off untouched and left alone.
We can afford to forget our history and therefore must preserve the
remnants of our past.
We can not lose such a valuable historical site
We cannot allow any more historic sites to be destroyed. Our heritage
must be preserved for future generations.
We CANNOT allow this historical treasure to be lost!
We do not need another mall, if we need another mall that bad, find
someplace else to put it
We have short memory in our country. Please help us lengthen it by
preserving the past and remembering the events that shaped this nation.
We learn from the past.We must not lose precious remnants of our early
history, especially those linked to the Revolution, to senseless development.
We must save artifacts from this precious historical site as well
as the site itself. It is too important a piece of our history which
established our country and caused it to be the envy of the world
we need the history not any more malls!!!
We need to honor and protect this historic site as open space
We need to honor the sacrifices made by these Patriots!
We need to preserve our history
We need to preserve history
We need to preserve our heritage! Has our society become so greedy
that we need to destroy our history? We need to keep it so we know
who we are and where we came from.
We need to preserve our sense of who we are, historically. It is therefore
a shame to allow our war sites to be destroyed. Please save this one!
We need to protect our history
We need to remember and celebrate our history, not turn it into a
now defunct Dutchess Mall!
We need to save the Supply Depot. It is our civil duty.
We need to save this important historic site for future generations!
Why build a new mall when there is a run down mall right across the
street?
Without our history, what do we pass on to future generations. Either
NY wants its citizens to learn NYS history or tax$, it can't have
both. W/o having history to learn about we repeat its mistakes
